Welwitschia Namib Tour

Catamaran Dolphin Cruises offers a half day tour of the famous Welwitschia plant, and other exciting Namib explorations. We generally depart from Walvis Bay towards the massive Dune 7, and continue at the back of the dune belt towards the Moon Valley and several other landmarks. Typically we return to Walvis Bay via Swakopmund.

Journey Overview

Embark on an unforgettable journey through one of the world’s oldest deserts, where the stark beauty of the Namib meets the Atlantic Ocean. This comprehensive tour weaves together natural wonders, geological marvels, and colonial history, creating a tapestry of experiences that showcase the unique character of Namibia’s coastal region.

Your Desert Adventure

Walvis Bay Flamingo Colony

Your adventure begins at the tranquil lagoons of Walvis Bay, where thousands of flamingos paint the shallow waters in shades of pink and coral. These elegant birds—both lesser and greater flamingos—wade gracefully through the saltwater, their curved beaks filtering microscopic algae and crustaceans from the nutrient-rich waters. The sight of their synchronized movements against the backdrop of the desert creates a surreal contrast, while pelicans and other coastal birds add to this remarkable avian spectacle.

Dune 7 – The Gateway to the Sand Sea

Rising majestically from the desert floor, Dune 7 stands as the tallest dune in the Walvis Bay area, reaching heights that challenge even the most adventurous visitors. The climb rewards you with panoramic views where golden sand meets azure sky in an endless horizon. Feel the fine grains shift beneath your feet as you ascend, and experience the exhilarating rush of running or sandboarding down its steep slopes. The interplay of light and shadow across the dune’s rippled surface creates an ever-changing landscape of texture and form.

Hydrogen Production Plant

Witness Namibia’s pioneering step into sustainable energy at the cutting-edge hydrogen production facility. This modern installation represents the country’s commitment to harnessing its abundant solar and wind resources to produce green hydrogen, positioning Namibia at the forefront of renewable energy innovation. The stark contrast between this technological marvel and the ancient desert landscape speaks to humanity’s evolving relationship with this arid environment.

Moon Valley – A Lunar Landscape on Earth

Enter an otherworldly realm where erosion has sculpted the landscape into formations so alien they evoke the surface of the moon. The Swakop River’s ancient course carved deep channels through layers of rock and sediment, creating a labyrinth of valleys, ridges, and strange formations. The muted palette of greys, browns, and ochres shifts with the sun’s angle, while the complete absence of vegetation emphasizes the raw geological forces that shaped this terrain over millions of years.

Goanikontes Oasis

Discover an unexpected pocket of life in the desert at Goanikontes, where underground water sources create a rare oasis environment. This ecological haven demonstrates nature’s remarkable ability to sustain life even in the harshest conditions, offering a moment of green respite in the otherwise arid landscape.

Living Stones – The Ancient Lichens

Marvel at one of the Namib’s most extraordinary survival stories etched upon scattered rocks: the ancient lichens. These remarkable organisms—a symbiotic partnership between fungi and algae—can live for hundreds, even thousands of years, drawing moisture from the coastal fog that rolls inland from the Atlantic. Their crusty patches of orange, black, and grey create living artwork on the desert stones, growing at an almost imperceptible pace and serving as indicators of air quality and environmental health.

Welwitschia mirabilis – Desert Survivors

Stand before the legendary Welwitschia plants, living fossils that have survived in this harsh environment for up to 2,000 years. These bizarre botanical wonders consist of just two leaves that grow continuously throughout their lifetime, splitting and twisting into tangled heaps that sprawl across the gravel plains. Their deep taproots reach far underground to access precious water, while their thick, leathery leaves absorb moisture from the morning fog. Each Welwitschia tells a story of remarkable adaptation and resilience.

Musical Rocks Namib Desert

Musical Rocks – Nature’s Percussion

Experience the unique acoustic phenomenon of the Musical Rocks, where striking certain dolomite boulders produces clear, bell-like tones that ring across the desert. These scattered rocks, shaped and weathered over millennia, contain the perfect density and crystalline structure to resonate when struck. Indigenous peoples long recognized these stones’ special properties, and their music continues to echo through the valley as a natural symphony waiting to be played.

Swakopmund – Colonial Heritage

Journey into Swakopmund, where German colonial architecture creates an unexpected European enclave along the African coast. Stroll past perfectly preserved buildings from the early 1900s, their half-timbered facades, ornate balconies, and Lutheran church spires and Hotel Eberwein originally known as Villa Wille, speaking to a different era. The Woermannhaus with its distinctive tower, the German Lutheran Church, The Swakopmund railway station, originally built in 1901, all showcase the architectural ambitions of German settlers who sought to recreate their homeland in this remote corner of southwest Africa.

Swakopmud Jetty

The Swakopmund Jetty

Walk along the iconic Swakopmund Jetty, extending gracefully into the Atlantic’s churning waters. This historic landmark has witnessed over a century of ocean moods, serving as the town’s original harbor before the port at Walvis Bay took precedence. Feel the salt spray on your face as waves crash against the pillars below, and watch local anglers try their luck while seabirds wheel overhead. The jetty offers spectacular views back toward the town, framed by the meeting point of desert and ocean.

Return to Walvis Bay – The Coastal Drive

As your tour concludes, the journey back to Walvis Bay treats you to stunning coastal scenery. The road hugs the shoreline where the cold Benguela Current meets the desert, creating the fog that sustains so much of the Namib’s unique life. Watch the Atlantic’s moody waters, scan for seals lounging on the beaches, and witness the sun’s changing light painting the desert dunes in ever-deepening shades of amber and gold. This final stretch reminds you of the extraordinary meeting of ecosystems that makes this corner of Namibia truly exceptional.
